Chapter 12

Panic had a stranglehold on Sandy. They would kill Thaddeus, and if they killed Thaddeus, would he die too? Not that he’d want to live if they killed his mate.

He huffed. How could he have believed he’d ever be able to function without Thaddeus?

“I’m gonna try to get back to the station and get Ric and the guys.” He waited a heartbeat for a reply that never came.

“Okay, I’m going.”

Still nothing.

Sandy ran a hand through his hair. “See you in a bit, love.” He tried patting Thaddeus’ leg but missed, and when he finally found his knee, he patted too hard and slipped through. Shivering from the cold the touch created, he went through the door and shivered some more.

Adams was still there, but Grim was nowhere to be seen. Sandy walked down the road they’d come. The first hundred or so steps were no problem, then it became harder and harder. A tightness wrapped around him. He struggled against it, forced himself to take one more step, and one more step, and one more.

Like a rubber band yanking him back, he crashed through the door to the root cellar and landed in a heap on top of—inside of—Thaddeus.

“Sorry.” He jumped off. “Walking away from here doesn’t work.”

Sitting on the ground next to Thaddeus, he cradled his head. “What do we do?”

What could they do? They couldn’t sit here and wait for Grim to kill them.

The silence rang in Sandy’s ears as he tried coming up with a plan. He could move around a little, could go outside, but what could he achieve there? Where were the others? Shouldn’t there be like twelve women around? Why women? If he planned on using Thaddeus, why had he only picked up women before?

“Why women?”

Thaddeus didn’t reply—of course, he didn’t.

A tiny blue spark lit the dark from underneath Thaddeus. Sandy jumped to his feet. “Can you break the spell?”

He reached for Thaddeus, but his hands only slid through. “Oh, for fuck’s sake. How hard can it be to get my brain to understand I can’t touch things?”

Reaching in, partly underneath Thaddeus but mostly through him, he held his hand up to Thaddeus’. “Can you give me energy?”

The wave hitting his palm was much weaker than it normally was. The slow trickle of heat, not nearly as intense. It took a few seconds, but then Sandy grew more solid.

“I’m gonna help you sit up, babe. Ready?”

Thaddeus still didn’t respond.

Careful of his shoulder and arm, Sandy arranged him so he was sitting on the ground but leaning against the wall.

“What can we do? When Ric attacked you, you drew from me, right? Can you do it again?” He took Thaddeus’ hand in his, fearing he’d fade any moment now.

Thaddeus didn’t move, didn’t utter a word. Sandy wanted to growl. He’d seen Thaddeus do magic several times, there was always a little finger-moving and a little mumbling. “Come on, babe.” He pushed his hand more firmly against Thaddeus’. “Take from me. Please.”

It was nothing like the quick, pitching pull it had been the first time, but Sandy was dissolving.
