Chapter 12
Panic had a stranglehold on Sandy. They would kill Thaddeus, and if they killed Thaddeus, would he die too? Not that heâd want to live if they killed his mate.
He huffed. How could he have believed heâd ever be able to function without Thaddeus?
âIâm gonna try to get back to the station and get Ric and the guys.â He waited a heartbeat for a reply that never came.
âOkay, Iâm going.â
Still nothing.
Sandy ran a hand through his hair. âSee you in a bit, love.â He tried patting Thaddeusâ leg but missed, and when he finally found his knee, he patted too hard and slipped through. Shivering from the cold the touch created, he went through the door and shivered some more.
Adams was still there, but Grim was nowhere to be seen. Sandy walked down the road theyâd come. The first hundred or so steps were no problem, then it became harder and harder. A tightness wrapped around him. He struggled against it, forced himself to take one more step, and one more step, and one more.
Like a rubber band yanking him back, he crashed through the door to the root cellar and landed in a heap on top ofâinside ofâThaddeus.
âSorry.â He jumped off. âWalking away from here doesnât work.â
Sitting on the ground next to Thaddeus, he cradled his head. âWhat do we do?â
What could they do? They couldnât sit here and wait for Grim to kill them.
The silence rang in Sandyâs ears as he tried coming up with a plan. He could move around a little, could go outside, but what could he achieve there? Where were the others? Shouldnât there be like twelve women around? Why women? If he planned on using Thaddeus, why had he only picked up women before?
âWhy women?â
Thaddeus didnât replyâof course, he didnât.
A tiny blue spark lit the dark from underneath Thaddeus. Sandy jumped to his feet. âCan you break the spell?â
He reached for Thaddeus, but his hands only slid through. âOh, for fuckâs sake. How hard can it be to get my brain to understand I canât touch things?â
Reaching in, partly underneath Thaddeus but mostly through him, he held his hand up to Thaddeusâ. âCan you give me energy?â
The wave hitting his palm was much weaker than it normally was. The slow trickle of heat, not nearly as intense. It took a few seconds, but then Sandy grew more solid.
âIâm gonna help you sit up, babe. Ready?â
Thaddeus still didnât respond.
Careful of his shoulder and arm, Sandy arranged him so he was sitting on the ground but leaning against the wall.
âWhat can we do? When Ric attacked you, you drew from me, right? Can you do it again?â He took Thaddeusâ hand in his, fearing heâd fade any moment now.
Thaddeus didnât move, didnât utter a word. Sandy wanted to growl. Heâd seen Thaddeus do magic several times, there was always a little finger-moving and a little mumbling. âCome on, babe.â He pushed his hand more firmly against Thaddeusâ. âTake from me. Please.â
It was nothing like the quick, pitching pull it had been the first time, but Sandy was dissolving.
